Chief Sustainability Officers: Who Are They and What Do They Do? by Kathleen Miller and George Serafeim, sep 11, 2014The article is about the importance of Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs) within organizations. Specifically how their responsibilities and authority evolve as companies progress through different stages of sustainability commitment. It goes into detail about how CSOs manage to decentralize decision rights and distribute responsibilities throughout the organization. From reading this article, I learned about the dynamic nature of the CSO's role in creating sustainable practices within a company. What stood out to me was how sustainability strategies transform from generic to highly customized as companies mature in their sustainability efforts. This shift shows the growing importance of sustainability in corporate strategies and how complex and specialized knowledge is required from today’s CSOs. It was interesting to learn that as organizations become more committed to sustainability, the role of a CSO becomes less about direct oversight and more about integration and influence across various business units. The article resonates with what I’ve learned in my business management class about strategic leadership and change management, emphasizing how important it is for leaders to adapt and distribute responsibilities effectively.

How to Keep Employees Productive: Support Caregivers by kaRa Baskin, 01/23/24This article focuses on a common challenge U.S. workers face; the balancing of their roles as caregivers with their professional lives. Research is provided in this article on how supporting employees who are caregivers not only helps them personally but also benefits the companies they work for by reducing turnover and saving costs. One of the most surprising points mentioned in the article is the statistic that 50% of workers between the ages of 26 and 35 feel that caregiving has negatively impacted their careers. This statistic makes me fear my ability to balance my career and caregiving in the future. An idea of calculating the "return on investment" for caregiving support is mentioned in the article, it suggests that investing in family-friendly policies, it can financially benefit businesses. I believe this idea would aid in encouraging more companies to consider supporting their caregiving employees. By reading this article, I learned about the link between employee support and company benefits. I now know that creating a supportive work environment for caregivers can lead to better outcomes for both the employees and employers. From my own personal observations, I've seen coworkers struggle to juggle their jobs and caregiving responsibilities. This article reinforced how common this issue is and its need to be addressed in the workplace. Lessons in Decision-Making: Confident People Aren't Always Correct (Except When They Are) by kara baskin, 12/05/23This article is about the link between confidence and decision-making skills. The author of this article argues that while confidence is often valued in leaders, it is not necessarily correlated with competence. Instead, leaders who make the correct choices are well aware of the limitations of their knowledge. Through this article I learned effective decision-making requires a balance between confidence and humility. The loudest voice in the room is always the wisest. In my own experiences, I've encountered situations where confidence didn't necessarily align with competence. Reflecting on these instances, I see the value in Graeber's research. I realized that sometimes confidence may have overshadowed competence or humility may have led to better outcomes. This article also encouraged me to speak up when I am confident about something and seek assistance when I am uncertain.
HOW DO GREAT LEADERS OVERCOME ADVERSITY? COLD CALL PODCAST, march 26, 2024 The article was a transcript of a cold-call podcast episode. This episode's guest was Tony Mayo. Strategies regarding cold calls, sales and business interactions were discussed. Through this podcast, I learned that incorporating humour into cold calls, despite popular belief, is effective. Initially, I believed maintaining professionalism needed to be prioritized. However, after reading the transcript of this podcast, I have now learned that injecting humour into the cold call can aid in humanizing the interaction and alleviate tension. By doing so, the overall quality of interaction is improved, as you are also more likely to be memorable and build a stronger relationship. The article also discusses a concept learned in school; the importance of understanding consumer needs. I aim to apply what I have learned from this podcast in the future, in both sales and interpersonal interactions.
The article discusses the concept of self-awareness, specifically concerning leadership and personal development. Findings from extensive research are mentioned which highlight the two main types of self-awareness. These two types of self-awareness are internal and external. Internal self-awareness refers to how we see ourselves and external self-awareness is how others view us.
What stood out to me are the limitations of introspection mentioned in the article. Contrary to common belief, I have learned that introspection doesn't always lead to greater self-awareness. Instead, the article suggests that asking "what" questions over "why" rooted questions can lead to improved self-reflection and insight. Additionally, the article emphasizes the importance of seeking feedback from “loving critics” which refers to trusted individuals. Constructive criticism from feedback works to improve self-awareness and ultimately lead to personal growth. This article assists readers to reconsider their approach and techniques to becoming more self-aware. The article "Lessons from 5 Leaders Who Changed The World" discusses tips, techniques and/or traits regarding various leaders that ultimately aided in their life successes. The article mentions well-known leaders such as Mary Kay Ash, Bill Wilson, Sarah Breedlove, P.T. Barnum and Steve Jobs. I was previously knowledgable about much of the information provided in the article. I had gained this knowledge through classes, extracurriculars, advice given to me and classes I've taken. For example, prior to reading this article, I was thoroughly aware about the importance of networking, elimination of ego and developing a deeper sense of your audience. Despite this, Mary Kay Ash's "advice" was new to me and stuck out. Mary Kay Ash claims that praise is powerful and implies that criticism should be avoided. Additionally she states that if criticism must be given, praise should be given before and after hand. This surprised me as I previously believed that criticism is beneficial as it's often constructive and allows for improvement. It can also be motivating in some instances depending on the recipient's mindset. Prior reading this article, I had strongly held the belief that excessive praise is unhelpful as it creates a false sense of prosperity and eliminates the motivation for improvement. However, after reading about Mary Kay Ash's life and how praise from her parents aided in her success, my previous perspective regarding excessive praise has altered. I also aim to apply what I have learned from Mary Kay Ash's advice in regard to providing criticism; to "sandwich" criticism in-between praise.

In today’s tech driven world, the concept of Digital citizenship is more important than ever. The need for individuals to use the internet responsibly has intensified as the misuse holds greater consequences. Consequences of not using the internet responsibly includes job loss, strained relationships, tarnished reputation and possible legal repercussions. One can apply the concept of digital citizenship by using the T.H.I.N.K acronym before creating posts. T.H.I.N.K stands for is it Truthful, is it Helpful, is it Inspiring, is it Necessary, and is it Kind. The use of this acronym can prompt individuals to reflect on their posts and aid in the prevention of hurtful or inaccurate posts that may lead to negative outcomes.
